Linton N. Tibbetts, OBE
Late Founder of Tibbetts Lumber Co. LLC & Cox Lumber LTD.

Linton N. Tibbetts, OBE and his family opened Tibbetts Lumber Co., LLC in 2009 with the same premise that made his former company, Cox Lumber Co., so successful. Mr. Tibbetts endeavored to build strong relationships with his employees, provide outstanding customer service, execute ethical business transactions and cater to customers’ expectations. Mr. T.T. Cox hired Mr. Tibbetts to work in his St. Petersburg lumberyard and by 1949, he had saved $500 for a down payment on the $1,500 purchase of half of the interest in Cox Lumber Co. that Mr. Cox owned. Eleven years later, Mr. Tibbetts bought out his partner, but kept the Cox Lumber name because the letter C (for Cox) came before the letter T (for Tibbetts) in the phone book. When The Home Depot purchased Cox Lumber Co.’s 26-store network of lumberyards, 15 door plants and 11 truss plants in May 2006, the Company had revenues of $396 million, and was the largest privately held building materials dealer in the Southeastern United States. Mr. Tibbetts’ business sense and timing of the sale were legendary among his peers, and almost three years later, Mr. Tibbetts and his family established Tibbetts Lumber Co. in April 2009.

Linton was born and raised in the Cayman Islands and spent significant time there throughout his life. He made many contributions to his homeland through supporting the construction of schools and homes for the elderly, establishing an airline, and building and operating multiple businesses throughout the Islands including hotels, grocery stores, museums, and the current Cox Lumber Ltd., which has three locations on Grand Cayman. Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II honored Mr. Tibbetts in 2003 for his contributions to the Cayman Islands by bestowing upon him the title - Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE). Before his passing in October 2011 at 88 years old, Linton and his wife Polly lived in St. Petersburg, Florida. Together they had 4 children, 9 grandchildren and a multitude of great grandchildren. The entire family remains invested in the family’s businesses, which include commercial, residential, and industrial real estate, retail centers, dive resorts, grocery stores, truss plants and lumber yards.
